As i understand it, Britons were a Gaelic group of tribes originating from phonecia over 2000 years ago. They were then taken over by the Romans, then the Saxons, a German tribe. The angles, from the north, and the vikings, from Norway, came soon after, the conquered people now being known as Anglo-Saxons because they mixed over time. The land was known as Angle-land, or England as it became. The lands of Scotland, Wales and Ireland stayed more or less Gaelic. Then in 1066 the Normans came from France, and conquered the Anglo-saxon king, King Harald, by shooting him in the eye with an arrow. (Prendergast is a Norman name, by the way, I just found that out!)
The English are a mix of all of the above, and since the Angles were Scandinavian, who in turn came from Germanic tribes, I would say that on the whole the English are practically German, with a little bit of Gaelic, Roman and French thrown in.
Jews were also in the mix for at least a thousand years, surviving despite all the bloody Pogroms (state/church sanctioned persecution of Jews), they kept more or less to themselves.
This is how it stayed, until recently, when the British Empire brought slaves from it's colonized lands in Africa, and more recently immigrants from other colonized lands, mainly Carribean and Indian/Pakistani, in the last 50 years. These people have mixed with the English in the large cities, so now this is added to the overall mix.
This is the origin of British people so far.
