Similarities:

  • World War 1 and the Revolutionary War had the British, the French, The Hessians or Prussians fighting in both wars. Both wars ended up being "world wars" involving more than two nations.
  • Both wars started out being wars about imperialists oppressing and treating people groups badly. The House of Hapsburg of the Austrian/Hungarian Monarchy were treating the Serbians and Bosnians badly. The Serbs and Bosnians wanted self rule and freedom. The monarchs thought of them as being lower than dirt and would not give them their freedom. In the American Revolutionary war King George was harassing the "Colonists" for taxes since he was out of money and he wanted them to obey him. Most people in the 13 or more colonies did not want to pay taxes to King George because he was broke. And they did not see themselves as a British possession. Many came to the Americas to get away from Britain and the UK.
  • Both wars ended up in a basic stalemate until the "bad guy" gave up.
  • Both wars were fought in deplorable conditions. They were under supplied, underfed and not properly clothed. In both wars the troops would suffer or die from trench foot type conditions, exposure to the cold, starvation, disease and they were under supplied with war ammo and implements.
  • Both wars led to another war. World War 1 led to World War 2. The American Revolution led to the war of 1812.
  • The Differences:
  • The Serbians did not get what they wanted and needed in the end. However, the German monarch abdicated. The Austrian/Hungarians failed to admit the war was their fault, not the Germans. King George stayed in the monarch position and continued to consider the "colonies" as belonging to the United Kingdom.
  • One war was ended in an armistice (World War 1) with a Treaty. The American Revolution was won with the Brits surrendering to the Americans.
  • The Serbs were not able to defeat the monarchy.
  • The Americans were able to defeat the monarchy.
  • World War 1 was futile and convoluted and lost sight of the real reason the war began. The American Revolution suffered many times but they did not lose sight of the real reason for the war. The overcame many problems and succeeded.
  • World War 1 was a mechanized war whereas the American Revolutionary War was not a mechanized war. There were no fancy trained medical surgeons, nurses and medical tents for the American Revolution as there were for the World War 1 forces.
