The Germanic migrations you are talking about occurred before the Middle Ages. They occurred in Late Antiquity. The Middle Ages were after the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire. The Germanic migrations ended up destroying the western part of the Roman empire. At first, they led to raids across the frontier of the empire. Then they led to invasions. The migrations spilled into the empire and were a driving force behind the invasions of all the lands of this part of the empire except forItaly.

In 406 AD the Vandals, Sueves, Alans andBurgundians from central Europe crossed the river Rhine and invaded Gaul. The Alemanni fromsouthernGermany took advantage of this to cross the Rhine, too. These Vandals, Sueves and Alans moved on to Spain and the Vandals and Alans then went to Africa, establishing the kingdom of the Vandals. The Burgundians established the kingdom of Burgundy in eastern France and the Alemanni took over Alsace and Lorraine in northwestern France. The Ostrogoths who hadbeenallowed to settle in the eastern part of the Roman Empire moved to southeasternFrance and then took over Spain, which became thekingdomof theOstrogoths. The Franks, who had been allowed to settle in Belgium by the Romans, eventually took over the whole ofFrance, southernGermany Switzerland andAustria. The Angles, Saxons and Jutes from northernGermanyand theFrisiansfromnorthernHolland migrated to England in waves and took it over.

A century later theLombardsfrom centralEuropeinvadedItalyand took it over.
