USA. I'm not sure which countries they still controlled after World War 2 but they held on to the Philippines for a couple of years before they left. And even then they still had some military presence in that country until the 90's. The British also held on to Hong Kong until their contract expired.
I think it might have been Great Brittain, they controlled what is now India, Pakistan, and other countries.

Countries take over other countries because of their imperialistic nature. For example if Country A takes over Country B. Country A can take natural resources from Country B. This benefits Country A, the country that is imperialistic because it has more resources that it can use.

So they could have control over the other country... in the imperialistic period of history, having control over other countries was a symbol of power to other controlling countries. Being imperialistic towards other countries was also an easy way of obtaining money, people (workforce), and raw materials.
