Maldivians are called Dhivehin, or Dhivehi people. Apart from the expatriate workers in the country, local Maldivians are almost completely 100% Dhivehis. Dhivehis also inhabit the island of Minicoy, in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, India, where they are referred to as Mahls. Historically, Minicoy is believed to have been part of Maldives, as it is shown in the maps of British, Dutch, Portuguese and French maps during the colonial era.
The origins of Dhivehi people is disputed amongst historians. Some claim that the original settlers of Maldives were Naga and Yakka people from Sri Lanka, others predict that it was Dravidians from South India, while some say that they were Gujuratis who sailed to Maldives during the Indus Valley era.
What is certain is that Dhivehis share a lot of similarities both linguistically and culturally with a myriad of races. Due to it's strategic location in the Indian ocean, traders from South East Asia, Africa and Arabs/Jews from Arabia and Persia often settled or stopped over at the islands for long periods of time. As a result, the language of Maldivians evolved into the unique tongue which is today, with many influences from Hindhi, Urdu, Sinhalese, Arab and Persian.
The diaspora of Dhivehi people is not particularly large, owing mainly to its small population. There are an estimated 350,000 Dhivehis in Maldives, 15,000 in India (with 10,000 concentrated in Minicoy), 10,000 in Sri Lanka, 3,000 in Malaysia, 1000 in Singapore and in their hundreds in Pakistan, Egypt, United Kingdom and USA. These are all countries which have established strong diplomatic ties with the Republic of Maldives.
