The Manchus were primarily horse archers when they first conquered China, they did not adopt infantry weapons & tactics until after forming the Qing Empire (1644) and added indigenous soldiers to their Banner system (each "banner" was a military division). The composite horse bow was the primary weapon of all militaries from Asia through Russia, Turkey to the Middle East and soldiers were judged by their ability to handle the bow while on horseback. While on campaign, a horse archer would carry two or more bows and up to three quivers. Lances and swords were considered secondary weapons and while firearms existed, did not take precedence over bows until the later 19th Century.
