In 1845 the US annexed Texas and in 1853 purchased the Gadsden Purchase. Overseas America gained Alaska from Russia in 1867, also known as Seward's Folly. President Roosevelt took control over the Panama Canal Zone in 1903 to connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Later America would acquire the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.
