The Middle East has strategic importance in more than 2 ways:

1) It is a major source of oil and natural gas - which power the economy of the modern world

2) It covers the land area where Europe, Asia, and Africa meet - thus it is important for land transport between Europe and Africa and between Asia and Africa (yes - technically the middle east is part of Asia - but think of it in terms of transport between the Africa and the REST of Asia) and can be an important crossroads between Europe and Asia.

3) The Suez canal between the Mediterranean and the Indian ocean is located in the middle east. The land distance between the Mediterranean and Indian oceans is at its minimum in the middle east and thus it is important in water transportation of goods between Europe, and North Africa (on the Mediterranean) and all the countries that have ports on the Indian ocean - including India with its 1 billion plus people.

4) The middle east contains the holy sites of Islam which is a major world religion. Any threat to those sites can trigger major response from the roughly 1,571,198,000 (according to Wikipedia) Muslims spread throughout the world.

5) Since the middle east is the spiritual center for and the geographical origin of Islam, attitudes, policies, and religious doctrines originating there influence the rest of the Muslim world.
