Henry VIII started out as a Catholic but then went on to create the Anglican religion and the Church of England with himself as the Head of the Church.

Henry was originally a devoted Catholic before he was refused an annulment from Pope Clements. He then drifted away from Catholicism and made himself head of a new religion, Protestantism. Despite this he continued to be Catholic, he kept some catholic practices in place during his reformation.

Henry VIII started life as a Catholic. He wrote a thesis condemning the teachings of Martin Luther and was rewarded by the Pope with the title "Defender of the Faith".

It was only when he wanted to divorce Katherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn that his break from Rome started. He declared himself supreme ruler of the Church in England (note the "in" rather than "of") and went about taking over the land previously owned by monasteries and abbeys. That placed most of the country's wealth in his hands.

During Henry's lifetime, the Church in England was in schism with Rome but its character did not change much. It was not until after his death that the Anglican church separated completely from Rome under Calvinist influence. There was a brief return to Catholicism during the reign of Mary but Catholic practices were banned completely during the reign of Elizabeth.
