The Tuberculosis epidemic that spread from 1850-1900 consistantly was in correlation to the mass Immigration from Ireland to the United States of America that took place during the same timeframe. Although, it may not be the case that immigration to the USA was accelerated on a factor of any Tuberculosis epidemic or any other means for that matter. During the timeframe of 1850-1900 'The Great Hunger' in Ireland was also a cause for speculation (also known as 'The Great Famine' and 'The Irish Potato Famine'). The Great Famine was a cause for the islands' great change in political and cultural landscape. It has been estimated that well over a million people had died of starvation and disease during this time because of this great shortage in food. This may, with other causes in the time of 1850-1900 have been the reasoning behind Oscar Wilde's quote that, "The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple." What other words could describe the scenery of a country on the brink of destruction searching for an escape?!
