During WW2, a regiment in the US Army (as well as other countries) consisted of Companies and Battalions. The typical US Infantry Regiment contained 12 companies. They were grouped into 3 battalions, each commanded by a full Colonel.
1st Battalions included Companies A, B, C, D(Heavy weapons)
2nd Battalions included Companies E, F, G, H(Heavy weapons)
3rd Battalions included Companies I, K, L, M(Heavy weapons)
Each company totaled about 250 men.
