In response to the Boston Tea Party, the British Parliament passed the "Coercive Acts", also known as the "Intolerable Acts", in 1774. There were actually five laws, but only four of them were related to the Boston Tea Party:

  • The Boston Port Act closed the port of Boston until the East India Tea Company was repaid for the destroyed cargo.
  • The Massachusetts Government Act dictated that virtually all positions in the colonial government would be appointed by the governor or the King, eliminating many elected offices.
  • The Administration of Justice Act gave the governor the power to move trials of government officials to another colony if he thought they could not get a fair trial in Massachusetts.
  • The Quartering Act allowed the governors of all the colonies the power to house soldiers in unoccupied buildings, without the consent of the owners.

Benjamin Franklin urged that the repayment be made and a group of New York merchants went to Lord North with an offer to pay for the losses, but they were turned down.

As the conflict escalated, the British abolished the Massachusetts provincial government, effectively placing the colony under military rule. General Gage, the military governor, ordered raids on the Americans' munitions stores at Concord, touching off a war which lasted for six years.

Ultimately, the British signed a treaty acknowledging the independence of the United States. The East India Tea Company was never repaid.
