According to Malcolm X, there was a significant difference between the organization he wanted to build and what the Nation of Islam stood for. He made it extremely clear that he wanted to create a political organization where American Blacks could assert themselves against the economic, political and spiritual problems of Blacks in the United States. It would be different then the Nation of Islam in that it would embrace Black people of all faiths not just Islamic Blacks.

While in prison he was sent a letter from his brother that told him abstaining from drugs and alcohol would get him out of prison; thinking this was some sort of hustle Malcolm complied. His brother then visited him and taught him about the Nation of Islam, and family members began sending him letters about the group too. Malcolm later began corresponding with the then leader and self proclaimed prophet of the Nation of Islam. While in prison Malcolm began to accept the teachings of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X later renounced the Nation of Islam and converted to orthodox Islam.
