The Allied forces emerged victorious in the end of WWII. The mighty military of Nazi Germany started collapsing after the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Adolf Hitler, dictator of Germany, committed suicide less than a year later. Germany surrendered in 1945. Meanwhile, in the Pacific, Japan was still fighting the United States. To put an end to the war, President Harry S. Truman commanded an American bomber, the Enola Gay, to drop one of the first atomic bombs, nicknamed "Little Boy" on Hiroshima. On August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay dropped "Little Boy" on Hiroshima. 3 days later, a larger bomb nicknamed "Fat Man'' because of it's size was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. The Emperor of Japan described the nuclear bomb a "New and most cruel bomb". Japan surrendered aboard the Uss Missouri in Tokyo bay on August 15, 1945
World War Two resulted in the defeat of the Axis and the victory of the Allies. Soviet troops were present in much of East Europe including eastern Germany. The failed League of Nations was replaced with the United Nations. Germany was divided into East Germany and West Germany. The mistrust between the Allies and the Soviet Union set the scene for the Cold War. The British Empire was gradually given independence.
after ww2 soviet union and the other allied powers began an arms race, or a cold war. all countries of eastern europe where converted to communisim. Japan lost there colonys in the pacific, they also lost Korea. The communist controled the north, america controled the south. in the 1950s, the U.S.S.R. and the U.S.A. removed the troops and N.K. wanted to reunite the Koreas under one rule. So there was a korean war. NATO and the U.N. was formed to try to resolve and stop the spread of communism. the cold war didnt end untill the 1990s.
