The Puritans played an important role in U. S. history. They were among the first colonists, setting up the first colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Puritans immigrated in family groups seeking religious freedom for themselves. Many were among the more affluent family groups from whence they came.
The Puritans set up a structure for community life that was heavily dependent on their religious views. The rules and governance were harsh. Many violations of Puritan law were punishable by death. They did not permit religious freedom for other groups. Every member of the community was required to work hard.
As other religious groups eventually immigrated to the New World Puritanism began to disintegrate. Its way was too harsh. Puritanism failed as a way of life and the founders of the United States of America had that in mind (amongst other observations of religion and government in Europe) when the United States government was formed as a secular government- removed from religious interference.
However, Puritan themes still reverberate in New England in the form of stubborn self reliance, intellectual and moral rigor, a sometimes harsh judgment of others and devotion to hard work.
