Many also called them traitors, particularly those objectors suspected of simply being too scared to fight for their country. Until the Vietnam War the US and Britain offered non-combatant alternatives to objectors; those refusing these options could well be jailed for the duration of the war and possibly beyond. The US - during the Vietnam war - decided objection to a specific war was illegal and many objectors were imprisoned or left the US to avoid being drafted into military service.
