They changed the name to Ghana in remembrance of the Ghanain empire that ruled the area during medieval times. The name of this empire was Wagadugu and the kings that ruled it were given the title of Ghana, and were referred to as Ghanain, so this new name symbolized that all residents of this country should be seen as kings.
