Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot on April 4, 1968, while standing on a balcony of a motel room in Memphis, Tennesse. He was killed just one month before the beginning of a Nationwide Event he had planned, called The Poor People's Campaign (PPC). King's friend and colleague, Ralph Abernathy, stepped in and led the Campaign. Conspiracy theory: The PPC was a politically charged issue. It moved the focus of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference from civil rights of Blacks to Human Rights for all the poor people in the United States. Because of this change in focus, there was some speculation that his assassination may have been in some way backed by the American government which did not want its Capitalistic foundations tampered with if more socialistic welfare programs resulted See R.T. Chase, "Class Ressurection: The Poor People's Campaign of 1968 and Ressurection City," 1998. Essays in History: Volume 40; George Mason University, University of Virginia.
