The name Buddhism comes from the word 'budhi' which means 'to wake up'. Upon achieving the perfect state of enlightenment Siddhartha Gautama became a Buddha. Followers of his teachings (The Dharmma) call themselves Buddhists. Buddha means 'awakened one'. It is the name given to one who rediscovers for himself the liberating path of Dhamma, after a long period of its having been forgotten by the world. According to tradition, a long line of Buddhas stretches off into the distant past. The most recent Buddha was born Siddhattha Gotama in India in the sixth century BCE.
