The Third Crusade (1187-1192) by European armies against the Muslim-controlled portions of the Holy Land took several different routes. One half of the intended invasion force was led by Frederick Barbarossa, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, by land through the Balkans and into Asia Minor before largely dispersing after Barbarossa's death by natural causes. The other half, led partly by England's King Richard the Lion-Hearted and partly by France's King Philip, traveled mainly by boat from England, France, and elsewhere in Western Europe across the Mediterranean Sea until arriving on the shores of the Holy Land.
