The raid on the settlement at Deerfield, Massachusetts took place in September 1675 during the early stages of the so-called King Phillip's War. Phillip (really Metacomet or Pometacomet, a Wampanoag) had learned to hate the English settlers for taking over the best land and exerting pressure on native villages to relocate further west.

Phillip gathered warriors from the Wampanoags, Narragansetts, Pocassets, Nipmucs and other tribes and began to raid isolated settlements; in August 1675 the small town of Brookfield was abandoned. This was situated halfway between the Boston settlements and those along the Connecticut river, so a large empty stretch of wilderness was left between these two areas.

It was this isolation that prompted the natives to attack the river towns such as Deerfield, knowing that no assistance could reach them in time.
