Compared to so many Wars before and after, WW2 was not particularly long. Morevoer, as it pertains to the war in Europe, perhaps because of all the movies and stories glorifying it, many modern Americans don't appreciate how short much of the actual conflict really was. D Day on Normandy beach in France really was when the allied forces started an active ground combat in Europe. Certianly, there were air and naval battles for years before, but the point of the invasion force was that is what got the allies their military foothold. The campaign through Europe was certainly fierce but Germany fell only about 9 months after D - Day. The Pacific theatre was vicious a vicious combat for longer, really starting with or shortly after Pearl Harbor and ending with VJ day which was after V day in Europe...albeit again compared to many conflicts, not a super long time.
