After World War II, Russia and US and Great Britain were opposed politically. Russia was in the early days of communism. In order to spread their ideology across the world (which is the primary objective of communism) they entered into Vietnam in support of Ho Cho Mihn the rebel leader based in North Vietnam.
Ho Cho Minh pledged allegiance to the communist doctrine and Russia provided weapons and training as well as in some cases skilled pilots to fight.
The United States has had an anti Communism stance since the beginning of world war II. The United States had an obligation to attempt to stop the communists from taking control and getting a huge toe hold in the region.

The South felt that since Britain needed cotton for industry then Britain would take the side of the South for economic reasons .
