There are several reasons people remember the Gulf War.

1) Living Memory: The overwhelming majority of soldiers who survived the Gulf War on both sides are still alive today and can still recall the events that occurred during the Gulf War.

2) Kuwaiti Occupation: Every Kuwaiti above the age of 25 can remember the occupation of Kuwait by Iraq. It is a very strong and pertinent memory.

3) Documentation: There are hundreds of thousands of letters, commands, videos, audio recordings, and other artifacts which highlight the history of the Gulf War.

4) Relevance: The effects of the Gulf War such as the lives it took, the eventual weakening of Iraq, and the stationing of American soldiers in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are all current outcomes of the Gulf War.
