It was irrelevant to the US, and was very damaging to the Nation's International image as a violator of International Law and as a state dedicated to a new Imperialism. It lasted for a brief and shameful period in American History. Like slavery and the treatment of the Native Americans and the War with Mexico. the Spanish Anerican War and the treatment of Japanese Americans during WW2, it remains a permanent blot on American History.

Annexation was helpful to a small number of wealthy but well connected individuals.
