There are several reasons.

1) American troops fighting the North Vietnamese was like elephants fighting red ants. It was nearly impossible to fight an enemy that was hiding in the small crevasses of Vietnam the entire time. Their war ethic was none like the U.S.'s. We were just bombing and bombing and bombing, and all the while the VC were nowhere to be seen. I'm sure you have heard of guerrilla warfare. They took advantage of the fact that they did indeed, blend in.

2) The Vietnam War was not WWII. This means that we weren't fighting an enemy with a big target on its back. The VC were farmers by day, soldiers by night. So too often there was never telling who was the enemy, and who was just a civilian, which also speaks to the immense amount of civilian deaths that the US military caused.

3) The VietCong are indigenous, meaning a few things. First off, it means that they knew their land well, so they could maneuver easily through the terrain while Americans used maps and compasses that really did not come to any help when they were in the middle of nowhere. Indigenous also means that Vietnam is THEIR land. Vietnam has been fighting for its independence for centuries. They fought the Chinese, the Japanese, the French, and us. Very similar to our Revolutionary War, there was no way that the Vietminh was going to give up on their land, especially after they see the brutality that the Americans have the potential for. At the same time, American morale is low. There is some major racial discrimination, many became addicted drugs, and many more didn't even think we should have been there in the first place - hence the reason for a draft.

So who wants to win this war more badly?

How long was the Vietnam war?

Vietnam was at war with France before the US intervened in the sixties. In fact, they defeated the French in 1956 and became independent, but divided into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The Vietnam war the US was in was the result of the North and their communist sympathizers in the South (the Viet Cong) trying to unite the country under communism. When the US pulled out in 1975, they were successful.

What does In Country mean in the Vietnam war?

Since the war lasted so long and so many men were rotating in and out of South Vietnam from so many branches of service; US Army, US Marine Corps, US Navy, US Air Force, US Coast Guard...and probably civilians too (CIA, Contractors, etc.), plus there were so many 2nd, 3rd, and more "tours" in the Vietnam war...it simplified everything all the way around to simply state "in country." Meaning "he's either here or he ain't."

When did the US join the war in Vietnam?

The US joined the Vietnam War in 1960 or 1955because there was a civil war between North Vietnam and South Vietnam, and the US was good friends with South Vietnam's goverment, so they helped out.

True or false the us won the vietnam war?

False. The US lost the Vietnam War. The South, whom the US were supporting, had become very corrupt and the US public withdrew their support for the war. The US withdrew and retreated, so their objective was not achieved, and therefore was lost.

Why did the Vietnam and the United States go in to war?

There was no "Vietnam" during the Vietnam War. Communist NORTH Vietnam was attacking non-communist SOUTH Vietnam, and the US was trying to drive the communists out of South Vietnam...trying to stop communist aggression. It's called the Vietnam War because it's a lot easier to say, and less confusing...than to say "South Vietnam War" or "North Vietnam War", so some people go so far as to say the war in Southeast Asia instead.

What is the main reason that US go in Vietnam after the world war 2?

What was the Vietnam War like before US involvement?

More war. Before the Vietnam War, there was the other Vietnam War (French Indochina War, aka 1st Indochina War). Before that war, there was WWII. So, they had about 3 wars straight for 35 years.

What event led the us in the Vietnam war?

The French Indochina War most likely led to the (so called) American Vietnam War. Because the French war divided up the country into TWO nations; North & South Vietnams. When the communist led North Vietnam attempted to take over (conquer) South Vietnam... this led to US involvment.
