Because some people don't do their homework before they answer a question. The people that don't consider it a war probably believe the American Civil War (aka US Civil War) was a real war; when in fact neither the Civil War nor the Vietnam War were declared wars.

Many people (who haven't completed their studies in history) believe that if a war isn't declared, then it isn't a war. If that's the case...then the American Civil War wasn't a war either!

And lastly, if that's the case, then there hasn't been a war fought by the US since December 11, 1945...because that's the last time the US ever declared war on another nation.
