A thatcher is a person who thatches buildings. Thatch is a type of roofing material make of reeds, straw, or other similar plant materials. When properly constructed and installed a thatched roof is wind and water proof, and can last as long or longer than modern roofing materials. Its main drawback was its vulnerability to fire. Those with greater financial means would replace thatch with tiles or boards that had been covered with lead to combat the fire risk.
