The date most often given for the fall of Rome is 476.

What actually happened in 476 was that the last emperor of the West Roman Empire, the western half of the Roman Empire, abdicated in that year, in favor of the emperor of the eastern half, the East Roman Empire, or, as we call it, the Byzantine Empire.

The western part of the Roman Empire crumbled under the strain of the invasions of the Germanic peoples. The Vandals, Sueves and Alans crossed the River Rhine, the frontier of the empire in 406, and then took over Spain and northwestern Africa. The Burgundians settled in eastern France. Two Germanic groups which had been allowed to settle in the empire, the Visigoths and the Franks, eventually took over Spain and the whole of France respectively. The Romans lost political cohesion. there was a lot of infighting and a number of usurpations. Historians have set 476 as the conventional date for the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire because that was the year when the last emperor of the west was deposed. He was deposed by a Germanic military commander of the Roman army who led a revolt by Germanic soldiers of the Roman army who demanded to be allowed to settle in Italy. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years.
