lets clarify this one.. If the child is born in the US to a Canadian mother and American Father, then the baby is initially American, seeing as it's born in the US. Technically, you'll have Dual Citizenship, but the details really depend on the country. In this situation (Canada and the U.S.), the terms of citizenship are viewed differently.

In Canada you are fully allow dual citizenship and you'll be recognized as both a Canadian and an American. However, the U.S. doesn't do this and instead will see you as an American ONLY. Even if you have both American and Canadian citizenship, the U.S. will still view you as American and nothing else.

Assuming you have an American and a Canadian passport, you'll want to use your American passport when entering the U.S. and your Canadian passport when going into Canada. That says you're a citizen of that country and not a visitor (who is often put through tougher screening by the border guards).
