Yes, Filipinos are "Malay" by race definately, but not by ethnicity. Many people think that ethnic Malays are Malaysians, Indonesians, Bruneiens and Filipinos. On another hand, many people think that the Malay Race is ONLY Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines. For both are big misconceptions.

Ethnic Malays, are centered around countries and islands south and west of the Philippines, excluding the Philippines itself. The Malay "Race" however, not only ecompasses the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei but ALL of Southeast Asia, all of Oceania (Micronesia, Polynesia and Melanesia), and the African island of Madagascar. So this means, that Samoans, Tongans, Fijians, Hawaiians, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Burmese and Africans from Madagascar are all "Malays" by race. NOT ethnicity.

So are Filipinos part of the Malay Race? Yes, they are because Malay Race is simply an easier term for "Austronesian people", or the "sailing race". But are Filipinos ethnic Malays? Mmm...yes and no. By their origin yes, but as of today Filipinos do NOT speak Malay or a form of Malay as a native/national language. So no, Filipinos are not ethnic Malays. Malays don't even make a minority population in the Philippines. In fact, they don't live in the Philippines at all. The only Malays you'll find in the Philippines are probably tourists or overseas workers from Malaysia or Indonesia. That's all, no more.

Why Filipinos are being called Malay?

Answer:As far as I know, it's because Philippine schools teach Filipinos that they are Malays which is very bogus and a complete misconception. Filipinos and Malays have the same origin that is, but Malays follow a completely different culture. Also, note that only Filipinos call themselves Malays. An American anthropologist would not be calling Filipinos Malays. Here are the reasons why Filipinos think that they are Malays."ETHNIC" MALAYS vs MALAY "RACE"Also, "Malays" as an ethnicity and "Malays" as a race are commonly mistaken to be the same thing. The ethnic Malays, are an ethnic group from Southeast Asia who speak the Malay language or Malay dialect/creole as a native toungue. The Malay race is the ENTIRE region of Austronesia, meaning all the way from the African island of Madagascar to Hawaii's easternmost tip. Meaning that Samoans, Tongans, Fijians, Filipinos, Hawaiians and Madagascar Africans are all "Malays" by "race". So, "Malay race" is just a generic term for the Austronesian race so to speak.MISCONCEPTION OF MALAY AND FILIPINO ORIGINNow, a common and generally old misconception about Malays is that (especially with Filipinos), they came from Indonesia and Malaysia and sailed up north to the Philippines. Then they populated travelled up north and populated the Philippines making the Filipino dance party alive. There's pretty much one word I'd use to describe this, "bogus". This lie also explains why many Filipinos refer to themselves as Malays, whether it be the ethnicity or the race. It's actually the other way around, Malays actually were from an origin in Taiwan who reached the Philippines and then later Borneo, Sulawesi and Sumatra. As well as Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand.MALAY CUlTURE AND INFLUENCEAlso some of the culture of the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia share some things in common because all three countries share Malay backgrounds. Which is why Filipinos often refer to themselves as Malays. Filipinos and Malays both eat with their hands as a tradition and rice is served with nearly EVERY Malay/Filipino meal. This even goes into politics. For Malaysia/Indonesia and Philippines have different definitions of a Malay. In Malaysia and Indonesia, a Malay must speak Malay as a mother language and follows Islam. In Philippines, a Malay is a native to the Philippines, as neighboring countries south, Indonesia, Malaysia and southern Thailand. But remember, we sometimes mean "Malay" background by "sailing race", or the Austronesian race. You HAVE to always pay attention to which definition of "Malay" you refer to. So now we know, that ethnic Malays did NOT come to the Philippines from Indonesia/Malaysia, even though Filipino schools still continue to preach this bogus lie. However, there was A LOT of ancient historical and cultural interaction between Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. The Malays did come to the Philippines to rule the country prior to the Spanish colonization. But the Malays and indegenous groups of the Philippines were already seperate ethnic groups by this time.SO ARE FILIPINOS ETHNIC MALAYS OR NOT!??No, Filipinos are not ethnic Malays. They weren't Malays before, they are not Malays now. Filipinos are of "Malay stock" and this simply means that they share the same general physical and cultural traits with Malays. Sure, the Malays did govern parts of central and southern Philippines. But only the rulers and kings/sultans themselves were ethnic Malays, not the indegenous peoples of the Philippines. Ethnic Malays speak Malay (in any form or dialect) as a native language, and they follow the Islamic religion. Filipinos speak their own dialects, they don't even speak Malay as second language. They speak Tagalog as a second language. Even in Indonesian. They speak Malay (as Bahasa Indonesia) and most Indonesians aren't Malays they are Javanese. They are much closer to Malays than Filipinos, but they aren't called ethnic Malays and they don't have a problem with that. Most Filipinos are also Catholics, not Muslims. Although when it comes to Malay as a "race", yes Filipinos do belong to those.SO ARE THERE ETHNIC MALAYS IN THE PHILIPPINES?No there aren't. None at all. Islam is still a minority religion in the southern Philippines. Even the Filipino Muslims aren't ethnic Malays. Malays do not make a population in the Philippines at all. Most Filipinos aren't even closely related to ethnic Malays. Filipinos are closely related to the Chamarros from Micronesia, much more close than they are to ethnic Malays. In fact, Filipinos and Malays are simply cousins. The ONLYrelated ethnic group to Malays that exists in the Philippines are the Tausugs. Even in the Sulu Archipelago (a small island chain between southwestern Mindanao in Philippines and northeastern Sabah in Malaysia) there are no Malays. Malaysians from Sabah don't even consider themselves ethnic Malays. The Muslims from Mindanao don't even consider themselves Malays. In Indonesia, there a much close ethnic groups such as the Javanese, Balinese, Sunadnese and such. They all speak Malay, both the standard versions and the Indonesian register. But even they aren't considered Malays, and they don't call themselves Malays. They don't have a problem with that.

What is the race Filipinos belong to?

Filipinos are also called Asians insofar as geography since the Philippine Archipelagos are closer to the Asian continent; but, since the Philippines is comprised of archipelagos (groups of islands) and lies on the Pacific Ocean, wouldn't it be more accurate to call the Filipinos "Pacific Islanders"?With regards to RACE, Filipinos are of the BROWN RACE, the MALAY RACE, as defined by skin tone (brown or as they say, morena), facial bone structure and easily seen in the shapes of the nose and lips (i.e.,thickness of-), hair strand thickness, and color (black), typical height would be in the 4'10"-5' (5'1" or 2" is already considered tall). Remember, RACE is NOT DEFINED by skin tone alone but a combination of the above. There are only 5 races in the world: Caucasian (white), Ethiopian (black), Mongolian (yellow), Americans* (red), and Malay (brown). The Americans referred to are the Indians from the American continents, and Ethiopians or the black race are individuals of African descent. Most everybody would know who the Caucasians are--they originate from the European Continent, and it is easy to tell who belongs in the Mongolian race, --such as the Chinese;while the Malays or the brown race are the Thais, Indonesians, Burmese, Filipinos, Malaysians,..etc. and the Pacific Islanders. Take note, Mexicans are not of the brown race. Mexicans are either Caucasians, or, Americans.Quite often nowadays, --of the Malays or Brown race--people get confused since a big number of the nations where these races are from have now been mixed with Chinese, and whose descendants now have a mixed blood of Chinese and Malay. It is my opinion that your race would be the one that has a higher ratio of blood in proportion to the other mix.Race is NOT simply geographical. Of all the races, the Caucasians exceeds all the others in number, and they live in all the 7 continents. Anyone coming from the Asian Continent can be called "Asian", but it would not define that individual's race since you will find people of all colors living there. The Asian Continent is made up of countries with people of different races. We cannot single it out as being yellow just because it is dominated in size and population by China. Let's not forget that living on the other side of their northern border are a lot of Caucasians, and on the south are countries with a high majority of the Malays or Brown race. Then there is the term "oriental", meaning "of the Orient", referring to any item brought back to Europe by the colonizers that came from the Orient, or the "Far East".It also came to be and the term Oriental was used derogatorily by the Europeans back then when referring to a Chinese or Japanese.NO, Filipinos are not Orientals. Filipinos are of the Brown Race. Filipinos are Malays. Filipinos are Asians, or Pacific Islanders (since they live on islands on the Pacific). Some Filipinos are also 'hyphenated' , and prefer to distinguish themselves that way because of their mixed blood. Although it is a mix of blood (race), the added hyphenated name is more of the nationality, as in; Filipino-American, Filipino-Irish, Filipino-Chinese, etc... Some of these terms sound better reversed, and so goes--Chinese-Filipino,Spanish-Filipino....-------------"Pacific Islanders (since they live on islands on the Pacific)"--------------That is not exactly true. Filipinos, Japanese, and Indonesians are excluded from the list of "Pacific Islanders".------------------------------------Let's add some correct information. Filipinos are neither Malay or Pacific Islander. The Malay Race, is simply another word for "Austronesians". Filipinos belong to the Austronesian race, a race encompassing all the way from Africa's Madagascar, through the entire maritime Southeast Asia and Oceania. Pacific Islander is a cultural identity, and Filipinos do not follow any Samoan, Tongan, or Fijian traditions such as drinking kava-kava and lighting monoliths and such. Filipinos do not speak Malay or follow Malay customs. The idea of a Malay race is outdated.

Do Filipinos date outside their race?

Yes, many Filipinos date outside their race. Dating outside one's race is becoming more common and accepted in Filipino culture as society becomes more diverse and interconnected. Love and compatibility are valued more than racial or cultural differences for many Filipinos when it comes to relationships.

Where is The Malay Arhcipelago?

The Malay Archipelago consists of the modern day countries of Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and East Timor. This is where people got the concept of Malay as a race (Malays are also an ethnic group). Although, Malay as a race is being an outdated term. Because back then, people believed that all indegenous Indonesians, Filipinos, Malaysian, Bruneiens and East Timorese are all ethnic Malays. I use to think that too. But they are just Malay by race. So the Malay Archipelago is located in Asia, Southeast Asia. Before, the entire region was called "Malaysia" (combination of Malay and Asia).

What did the Malay contribute to Filipinos culture?

Most of Filipino culture is of ethnic Malay background. Filipinos, are known for eating with their hands which is a Malay tradition. Just like Chinese use chopsticks, and Africans use bread and such. Every Filipino meal is served with rice on banana leaves, along with meat that is marinaded in a thick sweet sauce which also a Malay cuisine. Although, Malays don't use pork ever since most Malays are Muslims. Filipinos however do use pork. Tagalog, is also influenced by Malay. There is a lot of cognates and loanwords between Malay and Tagalog/Filipino. Some of our native buildings in the Philippines are also built Malay style. Also, many people forget that Filipinos in reality are ethnic Malays. But, by Malaysian law an ethnic Malay is a person who is a Muslim and speaks the Malay language. Filipinos are for the most part neither of those, which is you'll mostly hear that Filipinos are of "Malay stock" but aren't considered ethnic Malays. Philippine definition of Malay is different, in Filipino law; a Malay is a native of Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia as well as Thailand and Singapore. Most of the Malay influence is seen with the physical traits and appearances of typical Filipinos, and MOST of the cuisine (with a sprinkle of Spanish), and also the language to a lesser extent.
