It is not just tamils who wear dhotis. Dhoti is the most oldest and most traditional garment for Indian men. Its been around for thousands of years, the paijaama and churridaar fashions (the drawstring pants ) have been introduced by middle easterners. Because they've been in India for so long that they've earned the title of "traditional Indian clothing" but for reals the dhoti is more traditional. if you havent noticed all the Hindu deities wear dhotis. In rural parts of India many men still wear dhotis. In fact regarding, Tamil ppl, they wear lungis, not dhoti, in which the cloth is simply wrapped around like a skirt. In most other parts of India, men wear cotton lungis to sleep. but for tamils they wear cotton lungis to sleep or while doing dirty labor work, and wear nice silk lungis with kurta top for formal occasions.

Not everyone will agree with this, but this is one opinion: Tamil Tigers are freedom fighters because: Before the British invaded, Sri Lanka was called Ceylon, a peaceful country for both the Tamils and Singhalese. Once the British left, they handed power back to Sri Lanka back, not realizing they gave majority seats to the Singhalese. The government then voted to make Singhalese the national language, therefore lowering the chance of Tamils finding jobs or getting into university. Then they promoted Budhism as the only religion to follow - giving priority places for university to Singhalese Buddhists. Tamils tried to make their voice heard but were constantly attacked by Singhalese mobs and gangs. In the 70's the LTE formed as a voice for all Tamils and power in numbers. The one mission is to fight back the Tamil homeland: north Sri Lanka.
