Its been around for thousands of years, the paijaama and churridaar fashions (the drawstring pants ) have been introduced by middle easterners. Because they've been in India for so long that they've earned the title of "traditional Indian clothing" but for reals the dhoti is more traditional. if you havent noticed all the Hindu deities wear dhotis. In rural parts of India many men still wear dhotis. In fact regarding, Tamil ppl, they wear lungis, not dhoti, in which the cloth is simply wrapped around like a skirt. In most other parts of India, men wear cotton lungis to sleep. but for tamils they wear cotton lungis to sleep or while doing dirty labor work, and wear nice silk lungis with kurta top for formal occasions.
