Absolutely. Neville was one of Washington state's most decorated service dogs. Rescued from certain death in Ontario, Canada, Neville was trained as a bomb sniffing dog and excelled. He only recently retired. If you Google Law Dogs, you'll find out more about service pit bulls.

There are two different types of dogs. (1) Scent hounds and (2) Sight hounds.

(1) scent hounds comprise of many; Spaniels (of all types) and one or two other HOUNDS.

(2) Sight hounds; Grey hounds, Whippets, and strangely enough all dogs with long noses.

(1) Scent hounds while they can use their eyes have their heads down and naturally use their noses. They will watch where you throw the ball, but will drop their heads down and use their noses at the last moment. Now to throw a little know (spanner in the works) some scent hounds are what we call air scenters, they don't drop their heads down and sniff the ground, they take the scent from the air, until the last moment when they drop their heads, air scent hounds have their good and bad points and are more likely to lose the track, but can go much faster over good ground with a heavy scent.

(2) Sight hounds will not go into the long grass and try to scent out the ball generally once they have lost sight of it they give up.

Now for the interesting part; To get a good hunting dog you cross a known Scent hound with a known sight hound and get a (Lurcher). So a (lurcher) is a scent hound crossed with a sight hound.

You cannot train any dog to track or scent. It is highly unlikely you will even attempt to try and train or waste your time with a sight hound.
