At the end of World War 1 (at that point called "The Great War"), Germany was defeated and forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles. This left Germany with a horrible economy (as most of their wealth was sent back to the winning countries as compensation for the war). They were also left with a pitiful army, with serious restrictions so that there was absolutely no way for Germany to ever become a powerful country again. The German citizens were hopeless, and despirate for a solution. When Adolf Hitler came along, he promised to make them a great country, and to make third Reich (world power, the first two would be Macedonia (with Alexander the great) and Rome). Since they were already ruined, they went along with him.
