It's very important to remember which Allies did what, to which part of Germany. As the War closed, Germany was invaded by British, Commonwealth and American forces from the West, and Russian troops from the East.

The Western Allies had every intention of liberating the nations Hitler had invaded, and eventually of handing Germany back to her own citizens after the Nuremburg Trials of the surviving Nazi High Command officers and ministers. Our USSR "Allies" had every intention of capturing as much of Europe as she could for her own empire, and succeeded, grabbing the Eastern half of Germany along with several complete countries from the Baltic to the Mediterranean. UK Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, described the partition as "an Iron Curtain descending across Europe", and the metaphor stayed current throughout the Cold War until the USSR's own collapse in the 1980s-90s. The Soviet invasion was partly revenge for the German invasion, but also towards the long-term goal of a Communist world. (Hitler's own dream was of a 'Thousand Year Reich'.) A somewhat surprising aspect of the Nuremburg Trials was that Churchill wanted the former Nazis hanged or shot outright, but Presidents Roosevelt for the USA and even Stalin for the USSR prevailed on him to use open courts and full judicial process. Adolf Hitler and his wife had already shot themselves; one or two Nazi ministers also committed suicide. Of those convicted, several were hanged, the rest imprisoned.
