General George C. Marshall is the true architect of victory. He took over as Chief of Staff of the Army two days after Nazi tanks rolled in Poland, on September 3, 1939. He took over an army primed to refight World War One, which was the 21st largest in the world, right behind Bulgaria's. Over the next six years he directed the growth of the army to more than eight million men, fighting victoriously around the globe, while simultaneously directing Air Force operations and an additional three million personnel in the US Army Air Force.
