It was rather an untidy deal, cobbled together after America's acquisition of the vast new Mexican territories.

California was to be admitted as a free state, Utah and New Mexico could be slave-states, and the slave-trade in D.C. was abolished. Also the fugitive slave law was toughened up.

It did not quieten the debate, which heated up even more when Kansas and Nebraska shortly came up for admission to the USA.
