Calling a "sailor" a "soldier" is like calling all doctors "surgeons." They were different occupations in WWII & Vietnam. During the Vietnam War US Soldiers belonged to the US Army; US Marines belonged to the US Marine Corps, US Airmen were part of the US Air Force, US Coast Guardsmen were members of the USCG, and men of the US Navy were called US Sailors. Approximately 174,000 US Sailors served in the Viet War.
In America: Soldiers are members of an army. Sailors are members of a navy. Airmen are aviation personnel, normally as members of an Air Force; Marines are Marines and are assigned to the US Navy. Surely you must mean how many US Servicemen were killed in WWII contrasted with the Vietnam War...because there ARE break-down statistics for "Soldier" casualties ONLY; for example, over 58,000 US servicemen were killed in Vietnam...of that figure, about 38,209 were US SOLDIERS. More US servicemen were killed in WWII than Vietnam.
The Army had around 4,368,000 members. The Marines had about 794,000. The Navy generally had 1,842,000. Lastly, the Air Force probably had about 1,740,000.
We were fighting both the North Vietnamese Army, and the "Viet Cong." Viet Cong translates to People's Army. They were mostly South Vietnamese citizens recruited by North Vietnam agents to help the North fight to unify Viet Nam. Both armies were supplied with Chinese and Russian military equipment and weapons.

One disadvantage towards the Loyalists (the British) was that their soldiers were mercenaries which means that they fought for money, while the Patriots (the Americans) had soldiers who fought for freedom.

There were two wars: The air war over North Vietnam and the ground war in South Vietnam. The US Air Force and US Navy (aircraft carriers) fought the war in the North. The US Army and Marine Corps fought the war in the South. USMC jets supported their marines in the south. The US Army and US Marine aviation units, for the most part, stayed out of North Vietnam.
