Vietnam War (1961-1975) or earlier (1955 when President Eisenhower sent US Advisers to Vietnam); but historians prefer to choose the year 1961. 1. Operation Urgent Fury-Grenada (1983) 2. Operation Just Cause-Panama (1989) 3. Operation Desert Storm-Iraq (January and Febuary 1991) 4. Operation Restore Hope-Somalia (1993) 5. Bosnia operations-Europe (1990's) 6. Operation Iraqi Freedom-Iraq (2003 to present) 7. Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan (2001 to present)
If you mean the northern states, they fought in the Civil War. Other than that one time, the US has always been united. Any wars which involved the north, involved the entire US. The US has, of course, fought in two world wars and many other wars.
Over the past 200 years, there have been many military conflicts and wars that the US did not participate in.Crimean WarRusso-Japanese WarFranko-Prussian War
Fighting has been going on ever since two people decided to eat the same food, but "war" didn't begin until there were fixed setelments - after the development of agriculture SO ... the first wars were fought about 5000 or 6000 years ago in places like Sumer and Ur.
Be more specific: "...lives have been lost in American wars..." does this mean counting the enemy too? Or just the US forces? For example: Approximately 264 US Cavalrymen were killed at the "Battle of the Little Big Horn" in 1876. But this figure does NOT count the Indian casualties.
World War 1 and World War 2 were the last declared wars that the US participated in.I'm sure however that there have been small regional warsafter World War 2, that the US did not participate in that were declared wars by the regional participants in those wars.

They were police actions. Had the invasions been approved by congress, they would have been wars.
