The US Civil War killed more American citizens than any other war. But it's far from being the bloodiest war. Some estimate that millions of natives died during Americas expansion westward from disease and battle.

The American Civil War killed an estimated 618,000 Americans while WWI had 116,000 American deaths. WWII had 416,800 and Vietnam had 58,267 American deaths.

Compare that to the tens of millions killed in places like China or countries in southeast Asia during their civil wars.

The US Civil War has the unfortunate distinction of causing more death and destruction to the United States then any war prior to it or after it. Statistics vary, however, most historians agree that between 620,000 to 675,000 troops were killed. Civilians also lost their lives as well. The property and economic damage in the South was huge. It is estimated that by the year 1900, the Southern economy had reached perhaps 75% of its economy in 1860.By some estimates, the death toll in the US Civil War, matched or exceeded the total death tolls of all other US wars combined.
