The practice of requiring young people join the military before world war one was known as the draft.
The Vietnam War had 16 million men that avoided US military service (dodged the draft).
Military draft in the Civil War often led to widespread resistance and opposition. Many people viewed the draft as unfair and unjust, especially because it disproportionately affected the poor and working-class individuals who could not afford to pay for a substitute. There were instances of draft riots and draft evasion, further highlighting the discontent and unrest caused by the draft.
Many young people who were drafted did not want to go to Vietnam because they did not support the war. To show their resentment, they burned the draft cards. This was quickly outlawed and punishment for doing so resulted in going to Vietnam anyway or being arrested.
It is estimated that approximately 50,000 Americans went to Canada in order to avoid the draft. The Vietnam War lasted from 1959 to 1975.
The military draft. Which groups? Those that were effected by the military draft; young men and their supporters (wives, girlfriends, sisters, cousins, etc. etc. etc.).

Mr. Obama, like many members of congress born in the 1960s, did not serve in the military. By the time he was growing up, there was no longer a military draft, nor a war going on, since the war in Vietnam had ended.
NOT too many young men want to have their heads shaved to the skin; be yelled at by complete strangers, and have to do PHYSICAL training; ALL AGAINST THEIR WILL. Regimentation and discipline (the military) is not liked by most draft dodgers.

No, he did not. But these days, that is not unusual. Back in the era before President Obama was born, there was a military draft and young men had to register for it; there was the Korean War, and then the Vietnam war going on, so large numbers of American young men were called to serve. Many members of congress in the 1960s and 1970s (more than 75% by some estimates) had already served in the military, and it was a common experience for that generation. But now, there is no draft, and many fewer members of congress (about 20% currently) have had any military service. That includes President Obama, who was a former US Senator-- by the time he was growing up, there was no more draft. And with no wars to go fight, he was one of many who never entered the army, navy, marines, air force or coast guard. But as Commander in Chief, Mr. Obama, like each president, is in charge of the military and oversees military strategy, along with his chosen Secretary of Defense.

Yes. Sexual orientation does not disqualify you for military service in the United States, nor in many other countries.
