After World War II France attempted to regain its hegemony over its overseas possessions in both Africa and Asia. They met with stiff resistance in both areas. There was a popular revolution in Algeria in the 1950's which culminated in the expulsion of the French government by 1962. Although Algeria still maintains close ties with France to this day. France aidied in the liberation and subsequent occupation of Lebanon and Syria in the 1950's and played a small role in establishing the governments in those countries. In Southeast Asia the French attempted to regain control of French Indochina but were thwarted in that effort by the communist Viet Minh, Pathet Lao, and Khmer Rouge guerrillas. From about 1945 and escalating to 1954 the French fought these different groups in various places throughout the provence. Ultimately though the main French army was defeated by the Viet Minh at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. After this French Indochina was divided into the three independent nations of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. France continued to grant independance to her other African and carribean possessions throughout the 1950's and 1960's. France still maintains close ties with many of her former African colonies and has sent troops to them on numerous occations.
