Oceans
2nd Answer: The Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean protected them from sea and air attacks because the planes in those days could not fly far enough reach them. Hitler was unable to build a bomb/missile in time that could reach the US. He did not have enough ships to focus on the US and Canada neither did Japan. They did however send a lot of submarines and actually did hit a couple places in the US and Canada but not significant enough to change the war. The Japanese were more focused on the Asian nations than on the US itself. They did land in Alaska and many of the US possessions. The oceans and long distances have done wonders for keeping many nations away from the US and Canada. They tend to be somewhat isolationist in their thinking because they are not exposed to other countries as the countries in Europe and Asia and Africa and South America are.
