From 1945 until 1954 France was trying to recreate its Colony in Vietnam. In 1950 the Korean War began and while active combat ended on 27 July 1953 in an Armistice, US Forces remain on duty there today. Japan had been occupied and was gradually regaining international prominence. The UK was combating insurgency in the area, and there was a continuing fear that all of Asia might fall under communist influence. The US had been slowly increasing its support of the South Vietnamese government since the French pulled out after their defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and this incremental support led to full scale American involvement in the Vietnam War.
