The most one-sided battle in modern history was arguably the liberation of Kuwait during the First Gulf War in 1991.
Belligerents (i.e. sides):
Iraq - 650,000 soldiers
vs.
United Nation Coalition:
U.S.A. - 697,000 soldiers
Saudi Arabia - 100,000 soldiers
United Kingdom - 45,000 soldiers
Egypt - 33,600 soldiers
France - 14,600 soldiers
Syria - 14,500 soldiers
Morocco - 13,000 soldiers
Kuwait - 9,900 soldiers
etc.
In total the coalition comprised of approximately a million soldiers (956,600 to be exact) from over 30 countries.
Casualties and losses:
Iraq - 20,000+ killed, 75,000+ wounded (exact figures unknown)
Coalition - 248 killed, 458 wounded
In order to confirm that the Gulf War was indeed the most one-sided battle in history we must look beyond the raw statistics to the greater context of the battle. Please consider the following points....
1. The coalition had an overwhelming technological advantage:
At the time, the USSR was in the process of collapse, leaving the USA as the sole military superpower. Regardless of this development, the United States military was already the most powerful fighting force in the history of mankind. It was able to deploy stealth aircraft, cruise missiles, aircraft carriers and laser guided weapons. They had total air superiority, eliminating air threats to coalition ground forces and providing intelligence on Iraqi ground movements. The Iraqis were outgunned in every scenario from tank firepower to assault weapon accuracy.
2. Many Iraqi troops were poorly trained conscripts with little heart for a fight. The opposing coalition forces were volunteers with considerable training, making them highly specialised in comparison.
3. Prior to the ground offensive, Iraqi positions had been subject to 5 weeks of intensive airstrikes code named "Instant Thunder." This was the largest concentrated use of air power in the 20th century and greatly reduced the morale of the Iraqi troops.
The most surprising statistic is that the ground campaign was halted exactly 100 hours after it began, making this the most rapid victory in history given the size of the armies involved. The only difficulties that the coalition encountered during the war was locating Iraqi Scud launchers which could fire short range conventional ballistic missiles on coalition bases in Saudi Arabia as well as civilian targets in Israel.
