∙ 9y agoThe phrase is usually attributed to Winston Churchill in his famous address at the end of WWII, and the onset of the cold war, and refers to Stalin's (The Man of Steel) iron grip on Eastern Europe. However the phrase may be traced back to the Babylonian Talmud.
Queen Elisabeth of Belgium used the phrase to describe relations between Belgium, and Germany at the outset of WWI, It's first literary use was in Arthur Machen's [1865-1947] 1895 novel 'The Three Imposters'.
