In the USA and some of the other allied nations men between the ages of 18-35 could be conscripted. They had to pass the physical to qualify. Men who were farmers, blue collar workers who produced war products and planes or ships and some of the medical professionals could not be conscripted. Men and women who wanted to volunteer for duties could as long as they passed the physical and were not the only child of their parents. Some men who had been part of the military could be recalled even if they were in their forties.

The reason why physicals had to be passed was because most of the people being conscripted were going to fight on the war front. They had to be well and strong enough to fight and endure dire situations.

Women were not drafted. In the USA over 300,000 women served in the armed forces and auxiliary forces both at the war front and home front. Many thousands of women also volunteered in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, England, Wales and Scotland also joined their armed forces and auxiliary forces.

One of the allied nations did draft some women but not for combat duties.
