Germany was without any doubt winning the war in Europe in 1940. In a short time the German Army conquered France which was previously believed to have the best and most modern army in the world at that time. Also swiftly conquered by the Germans in 1940 were Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, and Denmark. Great Britain appeared to be next and prepared for a German cross-channel invasion. Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ireland remained neutral, but much of the rest of Europe was either controlled by Germany or allied to Germany.
The Axis powers were winning. Check out www.worldwar-2.net full timeline, lots of interesting info.
