Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was commander of the US Pacific Fleet through the war, and also commander of the Central Pacific Theater of Operations. Nimitz was from Fredericksburg, Texas, and said he had been motivated in part to join the Navy by a hotel in his hometown, the front of which had been made to resemble a Mississippi steamboat jutting out into the street, there in the middle of dry, dusty Texas.

General Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower was Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), in command of all American, British and British Commonwealth troops in Western Europe (and US president after the war). Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas in 1890, but his family moved to Kansas when he was two.
