Germany (under Hitler's rule) resented the reparations that Germany needed to pay after WWI. When Hitler came to power, he started developing the German military and conquering "German territory." Britain, France, and other western countries developed a policy of appeasement because no one wanted to fight another war. Eventually, Germany invaded Poland, and Britain and France declared war on Germany because Britain and France had an alliance with Poland. This lead to other countries declaring war.

Germany was treated very harshly after the events of World War I in the Treaty of Versailles. It lost most of its overseas territory and had to pay impossibly large reparations to France and Britain. Also, due to the internal turmoil caused by World War I, the government in Germany was overturned and replaced with the weak Weimar Republic and because Germany had no real experience with democracy in the past, this government was, for the most part, a failure. Germany's economic downturn caused by the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles coupled with the Great Depression caused internal distress, which allowed radical factions, like the Nazi party to take power in Germany. This Nazi party was led by Adolf Hitler, who then proceeded to invade Poland, which started World War II.
